On the 9th of May 2024, a horrifying act of terrorism struck Son Village, located in Myin Chan Township, Mandalay Region, Myanmar, resulting in the loss of 32 innocent lives. The devastation, confirmed by local sources, underscores the ongoing threats faced by communities in the region.

Reports indicate that the violence erupted in the early hours of the morning when terrorists initiated an assault on the village, launching heavy artillery and small arms fire from the South and Southeast. As a result of the indiscriminate shooting, 17 men and 17 women lost their lives, while 5 men and 9 women sustained injuries.

In addition to the tragic loss of life, the terrorists inflicted further damage by setting fire to approximately 50 residential properties before fleeing the area. In response, security forces swiftly mobilized to transport the injured to hospitals and implement enhanced security measures within the region.

This heinous attack is emblematic of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, where numerous terrorist groups, operating under various names, including the so-called “People’s Defense Force” (PDF), continue to perpetrate egregious human rights violations. It is evident that these groups are emboldened by support from entities such as the self-proclaimed National Unity Government (NUG) and exile groups, which provide backing for their criminal activities.

As the international community condemns this reprehensible act and stands in solidarity with the affected villagers, urgent action is required to address the root causes of violence and ensure the safety and security of all communities in Myanmar.
