Terrorist Actions in Myanmar: Impact on Infrastructure and Local Lives
Yangon, Myanmar (30/05/24)
According to the report, over 1,500 bridges and toll gates were destroyed in Myanmar over the past three years. The majority of these incidents have been attributed to the KNU (Karen National Union) and PDF (People Defense Force) terrorist groups. These groups have planted landmines to disrupt transportation links in Mon State, Karen State, and the eastern Bago Region.
As a result, many vehicles, especially cargo trucks, are unable to travel through these areas. The terrorists aim to sever transportation links to damage the economy, leading to increased living costs. This strategy has caused significant hardship for locals, including difficulties in accessing social services and healthcare during emergencies.
Other armed groups, such as the MNDAA (Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army), TNLA, (Ta-Ang National Liberation Army) and AA (Arakan Army), have also been involved in damaging bridges. The construction of a new bridge can take anywhere from two weeks to two months, depending on its type and size, with costs starting at $15,000. The destruction of these vital transportation links has a direct negative impact on the lives of poor local people.
The terrorists’ objective is to increase living costs and create hardships for locals to destabilize the government. However, it is the day-to-day lives of ordinary people that suffer most from their tactics, rather than the government. No country in the world condones such uncivilized acts of terrorism.
