Yangon, Myanmar (12/05/24)

Reports from local sources indicate that the vital Kyon Aik Bridge, linking the Karen and Mon State along a crucial highway, was destroyed in an explosion orchestrated by local terrorists. Located near the Tha Hton and Bee Lin township in Mon State, Myanmar, the bridge fell victim to an act of sabotage allegedly carried out by the Karen National Union (KNU) and the People’s Defense Force (PDF) groups. The detonation occurred at approximately 2 am local time on May 11, 2024.

This unfortunate event marks the second time the Kyon Aik Bridge has been targeted, following a previous explosion in June 2023. Tragically, the blast caused three vehicles to plummet from the bridge, resulting in the loss of an innocent life. In a distressing turn of events, authorities responding to the scene were met with aerial bombardment from the assailants, leading to the deaths of two individuals and injuries to ten others. The terrorists have repeatedly struck during repair efforts, exacerbating the already precarious situation.

As a result of this latest attack, the bridge has sustained extensive damage, causing severe disruptions to both cargo and passenger traffic. Some vehicles have been forced to turn back, exacerbating congestion along alternative routes. Measuring 95 feet in length and 36 feet in width, the concrete structure served as a vital link for the local community.

It is evident that these deliberate acts of destruction are aimed at destabilizing the region and undermining the well-being of local residents. The wanton targeting of critical infrastructure demonstrates a blatant disregard for the safety and livelihoods of the people.
