Militant Attacks Displace Thousands in Se Sai, Southern Shan State
Yangon, Myanmar (07/06/2024)
It has been reported that approximately 50% of the refugees who fled their homes are now able to return to Se Sai, located in Southern Shan State, Myanmar. The town was targeted by various armed groups, including the Pa O National Liberation Army (PNLA), Kareni National Defense Force (KNDF), and People Defense Force (PDF), initiating attacks on January 24, 2024. As a result, nearly all of the town’s approximately 2,000 residents were forced to evacuate.
Following a counter-offensive by the Army and the Pa O National Organization (PNO), the town was brought under control between late April and May. However, the aftermath of the attacks left approximately 70% of the town destroyed.
Efforts are underway to assist the displaced residents with reconstruction and resettlement initiatives, including the provision of emergency food and medical supplies. According to a PNO officer, approximately half of the town’s population, or 1,000 individuals, have been able to return to their homes. However, concerns about potential remaining militants in the area are preventing the remaining residents from returning.
Local residents are calling upon the Army and the PNO to take decisive action against the militants to restore peace and stability to the region.
