Resilience and Restoration: Local Residents Return Home as Myanmar Army Restores Control in Kawkayeik
Yangon, Myanmar (30/04/24)
Approximately 600 local residents have recently been able to return to their homes in Kawkayeik, Karen State, Myanmar, following the restoration of control by the Myanmar Army. These individuals had previously been displaced due to terrorist attacks.
The town of Kawkayeik faced a series of assaults by a coalition of armed groups, including the Kawthoolei Karen Organization (KKO) and the People’s Defense Force (PDF), starting in early April. These attacks, which occurred on 13 occasions, resulted in extensive damage to property and forced many residents to flee for their safety.
According to statements from the military government, the assailants not only infiltrated the town but also carried out destructive acts such as arson and looting. In response to these threats, the security forces deployed counter-terrorism measures with artillery support.
After a series of nine engagements with the armed groups, the Army successfully regained full control of the area on April 22, 2024. The retreat of the terrorists left behind significant amounts of weaponry, equipment, and casualties.
In the wake of the terrorists’ departure, local residents expressed their reluctance to remain under their control and have gradually begun to return to their homes. Meanwhile, security forces continue to work toward restoring stability in the region through targeted actions against terrorist and militant elements.
