In a formal gesture after the capture of hostage, the Chin ethnic PDF (CDF) rebels released a proof of life video on 1 March of the Kalay University Rector Dr. Yaw Han Tun who was taken on 26 February along with hundreds of students and teachers.
Two minutes video on YouTube platform was released by the hostage takers, National Unity Government NUG, the parallel Government formed by Suu Kyi’s NLD party after the February 2021 coup following controversial pandemic era election. The People Defence Forces PDF are armed-wing of NUG. The Rector acknowledged in the video that PDF forces took them against their will and said that some female students were released while he and other senior professors are being hold.
On 14 November 2023, more than 200 teachers and students were abducted by the Kayah ethnic PDF (KPDF) and senior professors along with the Rector are still being held for working in the University without joining their revolutionary cause.
The International Law Article 8(2)(b)9 (ii) of Rome Statute, explicitly prohibited the attack on Civilian Objects such as schools and hospitals.
