Hostage Situation at Dawei Technical University
Yangon (28 February 2024)
We regret to inform you of a grave incident that unfolded at Dawei Technical University in Myanmar on [insert date]. A group identified as the PDF (People Defense Force) perpetrated an act of violence by seizing control of the university premises and taking several individuals hostage.
According to local sources, approximately 70 armed members of the PDF infiltrated the university grounds around 11:30 AM, utilizing the cover of the sports stadium to conceal their approach. Upon arrival, they engaged in gunfire with security forces stationed at the Phayer Mal Gate, escalating the situation.
After a tense standoff lasting two hours, the assailants succeeded in abducting a Rector and three female teachers, identified as Dr. Kyaw Aung, along with two heads of departments and a teacher, whose names have been withheld for security reasons. The hostages were forcibly taken to the Kyauk Saik Kone Village, situated between Dawei and Yay Phu, amidst continued gunfire from the PDF militants.
This reprehensible act follows another distressing incident at Kalay University on 26.02.24, where security forces managed to rescue 285 hostages, yet hundreds remain captive in the hands of the terrorists.
We condemn these brazen acts of violence and call for swift and decisive action to ensure the safe release of all hostages and the restoration of peace and security in the affected areas. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this challenging time.
