A Moment of Liberation: Over 9,000 Prisoners Released on Myanmar’s 76th Independence Day
In a significant turn of events on the 76th anniversary of Independence Day in Myanmar, 9,652 prisoners were granted their freedom on January 4, 2024. Among them, 120 individuals were political prisoners who had been detained under the controversial 505/A law.
This compassionate act was part of a larger initiative by the caretaker government, marking the fourth instance where over 20,000 prisoners were released. Notably, out of the released prisoners, a substantial 2,400 were political detainees, reflecting a positive step towards political freedom.
