Yangon, 13 December 2023
The passenger train travelling to Yangon on the country’s main transport artery Yangon-Mandalay route was derailed by the PDF and KNU alliance opposition forces near Kyauktagar city on early hours of 13 December and the only rail road linking country’s north and south was shut down indefinitely.
The train number 6 with 900 passengers was departed southward to the major economic hub of Yangon from the second largest city of Mandalay on previous evening 3:30PM was attacked by PDF with remote controlled mines and the locomotive was destroyed. There is no report about causality in the time of reporting as the railway link is closed and situation on the ground is complicated.
According to the State Media on December 2023, there have been 129 attacks on passenger trains and stations, 46 destructions of railway bridges by the opposition forces since February 2021 coup.
There is no claim of responsibility by any opposition group for this particular incident but the area that attack took place is controlled by KNU/PDF opposition forces and the terrorist style attack on the State own passenger trains is common practice in Myanmar’s 75 year civil war.
