Severe flooding in Myitkyina has caused extensive damage and left residents stranded, according to local media reports.

Heavy rainfall over the past few days has led to flooding in villages and the town of Myitkyina, situated along the Irrawaddy River. On July 1, 2024, at around 9 AM, the water level reached a dangerous height of over 4 feet.

As a result, six wards in Myitkyina are submerged, leaving residents trapped in their homes and cutting off phone and internet services. In the nearby town of Wine Maw, a similar situation has unfolded, with five wards flooded, prompting relocations to higher ground and further disruptions in communication. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with many families being evacuated.

Heavy rains have also affected Putao, Ta Nine, and Che Phwe, located north of Myitkyina, necessitating substantial assistance and aid. The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning for more rain and potential flooding for towns near the river due to the rising water levels.

The Irrawaddy River, the largest river in Myanmar, originates from the high mountains of Kachin State in the north and flows southward to the Andaman Sea.
