On May 28, 2024, eight individuals, including members of the People’s Defense Force (PDF), were killed in Depe Yin Township, Sagaing Region, Myanmar, due to internal conflict among PDF factions. The violence erupted when two PDF members visited their families in Te Taw Village early that morning.

During the confrontation, one PDF member and four of their family members were fatally shot. Another PDF member managed to escape despite sustaining injuries and informed their leader. This led to a renewed clash when they returned to the village, resulting in the deaths of three more PDF members.

Myanmar is currently home to numerous armed groups, including various factions of the PDF and local militias, all operating under different names. These groups frequently engage in criminal activities and violent disputes due to their differing backgrounds, ideologies, and objectives. The constant infighting and lack of unified command contribute to the instability and violence in the region.

The PDF terrorists receive support from the National Unity Government (NUG), an organization formed by exiles previously affiliated with the National League for Democracy (NLD) government. The NLD was ousted from power amid allegations of election fraud and corruption. The NUG, while claiming to fight for democracy and human rights, has been accused of indirectly fostering violence by supporting various armed groups with differing agendas.

The ongoing conflict in Myanmar highlights the complex and fragmented nature of resistance movements within the country. The presence of numerous factions, each with its own leadership and goals, complicates efforts to achieve peace and stability. The situation in Depe Yin Township is a stark reminder of the human cost of these internal conflicts, affecting not only combatants but also innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.

As Myanmar continues to struggle with political instability and violence, the international community remains concerned about the humanitarian implications. Efforts to mediate and bring about a peaceful resolution are critical to preventing further loss of life and promoting a more stable future for the region.
